Activation Glossary
Activation Glossary
Every Windows / Office activation term you’ll see in MAS, explained in plain English.
- HWID
- Hardware ID activation. Generates a permanent Windows 10/11 digital license tied to your motherboard hardware hash, registered with Microsoft activation servers.
- GVLK
- Generic Volume License Key. Microsoft-published product key that points an installation at a KMS server instead of retail activation.
- KMS
- Key Management Service. A protocol where a host activates clients for 180 days; clients renew automatically while they can reach the host.
- KMS38
- Hijacks the gatherosstate / KMS flow to mark a Windows 10/11 install as activated until the year 2038.
- Ohook
- DLL hook method that permanently activates Office by intercepting the license validation calls inside SPPC/OSPP.
- TSforge
- MAS exclusive method that forges trust store entries to permanently activate Windows, Windows Server, ESU and Office without contacting Microsoft.
- OSPP
- Office Software Protection Platform. The licensing subsystem in MSI Office (ospp.vbs script lets you query, install or remove license keys).
- slmgr
- Software Licensing Manager. Built-in Windows script for activating, querying and managing licenses (slmgr /xpr, /dlv, /ato).
- ESU
- Extended Security Updates. Paid post-EOL updates for Windows 7, Windows 10 and Server editions — MAS unlocks them for free via TSforge.
- LTSC
- Long-Term Servicing Channel. Stripped-down Windows / Office releases (no Store, no telemetry, 10-year support). MAS fully activates them.
- MAK
- Multiple Activation Key. A volume license that can be used a limited number of times. Different from GVLK / KMS keys.
- Digital License
- Marketing name for HWID activation: license stored in Microsoft's database against your hardware hash.
- Click-to-Run
- Modern Office install format (C2R). Ohook is required to activate C2R Office because OSPP behaves differently than MSI Office.
- 0xC004C003
- Activation server determined the product key is blocked. Fix with HWID or TSforge via MAS.
- 0x80072F8F
- TLS/SSL date or certificate failure during activation. Fix your system clock and try MAS HWID again.
